Sophia has created AmbianceTM, an ambient e-commerce platform that achieves all of this in a completely automated fashion, without the need for manual tagging of content, domain models or training of algorithms. It is based on a model of linguistics called semiotics – the science behind how we as humans understand the meaning of signs, symbols and text in context. Semiotics was originally developed as a way to explain how the meaning of a symbol can change if its context changes, and these principles were taken by linguists at the turn of the 20th century and applied to language.

What gives a word its meaning?

It’s the context of the other words alongside it. Given the word ‘Jaguar’ for example, taken in isolation it’s impossible to assign the correct meaning to it with certainty but if it is read in a sentence along with terms such as ‘hunt’, ‘jungle’, ‘prey’, ‘cat’ and so on – then it is clear that the context is an animal not a car. In a similar way the suite of patented algorithms behind Ambiance can read, understand and differentiate among the different meanings words can have in order to understand their true meaning.

A similar approach is used when analyzing product descriptions; Ambiance organizes products automatically into meaning-based topics and determines how they all relate, how similar they are to each other.

Finally, having understood what a web page is about, Ambiance can automatically match the meaning of the page to the products that are most contextually relevant in real time, making connections that are both obvious and non-obvious. It is the non-obvious connections that lead to Ambiance’ssignature product discovery capabilities.
